Two Sales, Tiny Hats and Valentines

We had four consecutive days of sunshine here in Tacoma. If you live in the Northwest, you understand what a treat it is to have so many glorious days in a row during the month of February.

The timing of this weather couldn't of been any better. I've had to spend a lot of time preparing for two sales this coming weekend, and there's nothing I enjoy more than making things in my craft room on sunny days.

I've got lots of new things in the works which I would like to share with you, and I'll start with what's exciting me most right now.

In December, I did a rather large order for a lovely bride who was getting married on New Year's Eve. The order was for 150 head pieces for her female guests - some tiny hats, some headbands, some flowers. After the order was complete, I was itching to make more hats. Thankfully, another order for tiny hats came in from her event planner. And after that order was complete, once again, I was itching to make more hats.

So, that's what I've been doing. Making tiny hats.

They'e made mostly of paper, so they're very lightweight, and easy to wear. They were designed with brides and maids in mind, but they're also perfect for a fancy evening out.

I'm enjoying the process so much soI think I'm just going to keep rolling with it for awhile and see what develops. Here's a peek at the new pieces.

I've also been making TONS of these cute gingham flowers in springy colors. They have clips on the back, so you can wear them in your hair.

Besides the hats and hair flowers, there have been lots of valentines in the works.

Like these tiny little guys...They measure just 1.5 inches by 2.75 inches.

Also, some valentine badges with squirrels in love, hearts and birds...

These were a big hit last year, so I made another batch of chains around your heart...

I'll be bringing all of this new inventory to the Second Saturdayz Market, Saturday February 11th.

It's a wonderful show - vintage goods sprinkled with vintage-inspired crafts - and it's organized by my crafty friend Linda (of LULUZ) and her craftin/junkin' pal, Debra.

The show's in Hanger 30 at Magnuson Park on Sandpoint Way in Seattle, WA.

Hours are 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Come for early bird shopping (8:00 - 10:00 AM) and pay $10 to enter. Arrive after 10:00 AM and pay $5.00 for general admission.

A Holiday Wonderland on a Tabletop

When I retired from flowers a few years back, I kept one client. We usually do just one event a year - a client appreciation luncheon. This year, she asked me to work with her on the company Christmas party. I was thrilled that she asked. I love doing flowers for her, and I love Christmas, and I knew it would be a whole lot of fun.

It was. In fact, it was probably the most fun I've ever had while working with flowers.

The event was held in the Presidential Suite at the Westin Hotel in Seattle. It's a beautiful space, and the view from the suite is outstanding. The twinkling lights of downtown make the perfect backdrop for a holiday party.

My client has a lot of props to work with, so we met prior to the event to pull a few pieces for the 20 foot table we would be decorating. We chose a few trees, candles, and baubles and had a great brain-storming session.

I left our meeting feeling really inspired, and began charting out the plan. I ordered all the flowers, selected containers, and began making the non-perishble details for the party.

Setting up the party was an all-day affair. A lot of the pieces were made in advance, but the assembling of all the elements still took a great deal of time.

The table scape was lush, and packed with many little details. I really wanted to create something special for the guests - something rich and layered and filled with surprises to be discovered while they dined.

In the center of the table, we placed a large acrylic tree. The branches were decorated with mercury glass icicles and moss nests occupied by sparkly little birds. When illuminated by the candles beneath, the tree looked like it was made of ice.

We also placed several wire trees with little pearls on their branches down the center of the table. The branches disappeared, leaving the pearls to hang in the air.

Our friends at Choice Linens provided the linens for the event. They did an amazing job draping our gigantic table.

The flowers on the table were thick. Black Magic roses, hydrangeas, cymbidium orchids, amaryllis, greens and berries filled the mercury glass vases.

Low and tall candles in birch and mercury glass ran the length of the table and illuminated the display.

Tucked between the candles, trees and flowers were little vignettes built inside birch tubes. The scenes inside were little woodland creatures exchanging miniature christmas gifts. Little "fires" were made using twigs and faux votives.

In addition to the floral displays on the 20 foot table, there were many other flowers placed around the suite.

And of course there were poinsettias. You can't have a holiday without poinsettias.

I was there when the guests arrived, and everyone seemed to really enjoy this display. It was fun to watch them circle the table, discover the details, point them out to each other, and smile.

Itty-Bitty Gifts

If you know me at all, you're probably aware of my fondness for tiny things. For as long as I can remember, I've liked anything little.

This week I've had the pleasure of making these itty-bitty gifts for a party that a very special client of mine is hosting. We're creating a long floral tablescape on a table set for 20 guests. These tiny gifts will be tucked into the display along with some small birds.

I can hardly wait to put it all together. The goal is to create a display with lots of little surprises for the guests to discover during their dinner.

Below is a little peek at the tiny gifts. I'll be taking lots of pictures of the whole display, and share will them after the event.

I have to say, wrapping these tiny gifts was just about the most fun I've had all year.

It's Sparkle Season!

Generally, I try to keep my glitter and bling to a minimum, but once the holiday season begins, those rules go out the window.

This time of year I do enjoy adding a little extra sparkle to everything, and I just got done trimming our dining room chandelier.

I am a total holiday nerd and if it was socially acceptable (and not a fire hazard) to keep a Christmas tree up year round, I would probably do it.

This was a full weekend! I started off Saturday sitting on a panel moderated by Katy Evans (of Post Defiance) along with artist Chandler O'Leary and writer (and Metro Parks Commissioner) Erik Hanberg.

The panel was part of the Tacoma Art Symposium and we discussed how artists can use social media tools to promote their work. It was an interesting discussion and the audience had lots of great questions.

As soon as the panel wrapped up, I dashed over to Kings Books for day one of the Artist Craft Fair. It was an awesome day. Traffic was steady, and I think it was a successful day for all of the participants. Thank you Tacoma for being so supportive of your local artists!

Day two wasn't quite as bustling as day one, but still a very good day.

There were lots of new folks at the sale this year, like Libertine Tacoma, and Matthew Porter. We saw many of our regulars too. I love seeing all that's being made in and around Tacoma. It's always inspiring. I enjoy the opportunity to talk with other artists and crafters at sales like this. When you work from home, you can feel a little cut-off from the world. It's nice to spend a couple of days connecting with people and finding out about what everyone is up to.

I brought lots of inventory along for the sale including ornaments, pins, birdcages and wreaths. This was my first craft sale with the wreaths and I always feel a tad nervous when I introduce new things. Thankfully, they were well received and I spent Saturday night making several new ones to replace the ones that sold that day.

There's lots more making ahead, holiday craft sale season is just getting started!

Fresh Flowers and Holiday Fairs

Oh, what a week! I came out of retirement to do fresh flowers for an event this week. It's been awhile since I've done any (fresh) floral arranging at all and I had forgotten how exhausting that work can be.

The party was huge, and the flowers were plentiful, but I have to say, it went pretty smoothly. No glitches at all, in fact. Just some achey bones today.

After a smooth event, it's tempting to step back into the business. But my heart is in the craft world, and I need to keep pushing that business ahead.

So, this week I purged the last of my remaining floral supplies. I took 3 carloads of props, vases, and assorted supplies to Goodwill. I kept the basics - rolls of tape, my knives and clippers - but the rest went away.

Soon, we'll begin renovating my former flower space into a sparkling new craft studio. I can hardly wait. Once the room is complete, it will be so much easier to work. My current space is packed full of supplies and inventory - leaving too little space for making. I look forward to being able to sprawl out with all my projects and still have room to photograph, pack, and store my work.

FIRST, I have to get through the holiday season.

This Week

I have to say, It's been a good week. For starters, I'm still floating on air about the whole BHLDN thing. Also, Halle Griffin wrote this nice article and there was a sweet little mention in the The Bride's Guide ( Martha Stewart Weddings blog).

As dorky as this sounds, the highlight of the week may have been discovering this fabulous cable knit paper at a local paper store. A good paper just makes me giddy.

I don't know what I'm going to do with this yet, but I sure do love these cable knit patterns. Sometimes you have to sit with a supply for awhile before you find it's purpose. For now, I think I'll just pin it to my wall until inspiration strikes.

There are lots of art happenings around the Puget Sound this weekend.

Today, my friends Sarah (of Deeds and Petunia) and Lori (of Parisienne Girl Designs) are going to be setting up shop at the Bellevue Club Holiday Bazaar. They were kind enough to bring along a few of my holiday pins, paper ornaments and paper wreaths to sell in their booth. If you find yourself on the East Side, please come by the bazaar. There's an amazing selection of vendors with lots of wonderful holiday goods for sale. The sale runs from 9 to 3 PM today. For more details, please visit their website.

For all you Tacomans, it's Art at Work month and there are Studio Tours this weekend. It's always interesting to get a peek inside an artist's world and see what they're making and what items of inspiration they surround themselves with in their studio. La La Laurie at BHLDN !

For quite some time I've been keeping a little secret under my hat, and now I can officially share it with you.

The past couple of months I've been working like mad creating bouquets and boutonnieres that are now available at BHLDN!!!

I love their dreamy wedding world and I was so honored when they asked me if I would be interested in working with them.

For those of you not familiar with BHLDN, they are an off-shoot of Anthropologie. It's your one-stop, bohemian, vintage-inspired wedding shop. If you haven't seen their website before, I encourage you to pay it a visit and get lost in it for awhile. It's pretty fabulous.

To fill their order, I had to make masses of paper and fabric flowers. I started off in my craft room cutting piles of petals, but soon the project started spilling out into the dining room, guest bedroom, and eventually the kitchen. We were living in a field of faux flowers.

I assembled the flowers one style at a time, and as I completed each bloom, I stuck the stem into a styrofoam board to keep them vertical and safe. Our dining room table looked like a parade float.

After all the elements were made, I picked my blooms from the boards, and the bouquets were assembled.

The bouquets were based on a sample piece I made for an issue Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom Magazine, so if it looks familiar, you probably saw it in the magazine, or in this post.

Once the bouquets were completed, the boutonnieres were made, then packaged.

Finally, everything was tagged, boxed-up and sent off to BHLDN.

And today, their winter collection has gone live.

I am so excited to have my bouquets and boutonnieres right up there with the many lovely pieces in their collection. It's a thrill, to say the least.

Holidays Ahead!

I worked as a florist for many years prior to pursuing my full-time crafting career. During the holiday season most people requested either red and green, red and white, or white and green flower arrangements. The limited color palette grew tiring just days into the season, so I tried stretching the definition of what "holiday" meant. It helped with the monotony of the season.

Since those floral days, I've enjoyed exploring color.

This holiday season, I'm using lots of gold with accents in black, white, chartreuse, and even a little hot pink. I'm combining lots of metallics with natural elements. I wanted to make pieces that would work in December, and into the New Year, too.

My favorite color to use at at Christmas is aqua blue - I love a 1950-60's inspired holiday palette and have lots of it on my tree and in my home. I've found some great ribbons and bits to use, and they'll be showing up in some pieces to come.

Do you have any favorite holiday colors? I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

It does seem early to be talking about Christmas, but Christmas Craft Sale season has already started! I've got several shows on the calendar including Glitter Haus, a very special holiday trunk show I'm organizing with my friends Sarah and Lori.

A Handful of Hambly

Hambly Screen Prints just launched a line of Washi Tape, and it's been so much fun experimenting with it. The colors and patterns are great, and it's so easy to work with.

I especially love it combined with their overlays. I've always struggled using clear overlays because I've always found it challenging to adhere the sheets without the glue double-sided tape showing through. The tape works so great because it's meant to be visible, so there's nothing you need to try to hide!

Here's a peek at a couple of projects I've made where I've incorporated the tape. Also, a couple of Easter crafts too.

Warm Colors and a Wedding Fair!

I've been working on a new, very vintage-inspired wedding collection and I wanted to share a few images with all of you. I'm using lots of whites mixed with pale, warm tones. I think they would be perfect for a summer or fall wedding too.

I'll be posting these on Etsy soon, but first they'll be making their debut at a the 2nd annual Vintage Wedding Fair at Ghost Gallery in Seattle this Saturday.

Along with these new pieces, I'll be bring along lots of boutonnieres, bouquets, corsages, wedding cake toppers, and my Making Paper Flowers book/kit.

The theme of this year's fair is "All in the Details". The show will feature vintage-inspired vendors showcasing their hair accessories, jewelry, dresses, flowers, paper goods, hair and make-up artist services, favors, sweet treats and more. Guests will receive champagne, light appetizers and the opportunity to meet with a select group of local vendors who can offer unique and affordable options for the wedding day. The fee for the fair is $5.

The show runs from noon to six, but be sure to get there early - the first 25 attendees get a gift bag filled with all sorts of goodies from the vendors.

A Crafty Wonderland Sneak Peek

I'm all packed up and ready to head down for Portland this weekend for Crafty Wonderland. I LOVE Portland and all the amazing crafters down there, so I'm super excited to be participating in the show.

The past few weeks I've been making lots of new inventory, and also working on some new display ideas.

I made a little cluster of sequined trees to hold the bird pins.

And lots of corsages, boutonnieres, and pins for Moms, weddings and everyday wear.

Nearly two years ago I was contacted by Sterling Publishing (a division of Barnes and Noble) about working with them on a paper flower book and kit. Finally, after a lot of work, and a lot of waiting, it will be hitting shelves of Barnes and Noble on March 25th!

Inside the kit you'll find the book, with lots of colorful photos and instructions to make nine different flowers and several foliages. Also, 36 sheets of crepe paper, floral wire, floral tape, and stamens. The crepe paper in the kit is a really lovely quality, and the colors are great.

I'll be pre-selling signed copies from my blog. I'm working on setting it up now, and will have a "buy now" button shortly. They'll be shipped on March 25th, when the book is officially released.

Yesterday, for the very first time, I got so see an actual copy of the book/kit. I can't even begin to tell what a thrill it was. Sterling did a great job putting the whole package together. It's super cute, and I'm very pleased.

A Wedding Collection!

FINALLY, I had a chance to add a few new items to my Etsy shop. I've been meaning to do it for quite a long time, but it just kept getting pushed to the bottom of my to-do list. Craft sales, travels, and other commitments just kept getting in the way of me getting it done.

Everything I listed today is from a little collection of very vintage-inspired wedding pieces. I've incorporated lots of little spun-cotton doves, Lily of the Valley, and Forget-Me-Nots. Also, you'll see a few of my wax-coated paper flowers.

The Weekend Report

This weekend was great!!! Both sales went well, and I had chance to see all sorts of old friends and meet lots of new people too.

The big sellers were the little bird boxes. I sold a lot of paper flowers too.

It's always fun having the opportunity to mingle with other crafters, swap stories, and see what they've been making. I'm feeling inspired, and am looking forward to making lots of new things for spring.

Flowers Galore!

Yesterday was ALL about the paper flowers. My inventory had dwindled down to a few stems, so I spent the whole day crafting some new blooms. I made dozens, and I hope it's enough to make my table stand out at the craft sales this weekend. Here's a peek at what I made.

I've got a busy week. I've got two craft sales this weekend, and a whole lot of crafting to do to prepare for them. I spent the past two weeks traveling in Venezuela, and vacation put me a little bit behind. The trip was fabulous, and the colors of the country were inspiring. Isn't this the most perfect shade of pink?

I've been making all sorts of things for the ones you love. Here's a little peek of what I've been producing for the sales.

In addition to these Valentine items, I'm making lots of paper flowers, pins and coursages.

I had high hopes of getting a few of my valentine gifts and cards listed on Etsy, but I just don't think I'll be able to squeeze that in this week. If you anyone is interested in purchasing anything you see, just send me an EMAIL and we can work something out via Paypal.

On Saturday Feb 12th, I'll be setting up at the 2nd Saturdayz Market in Seattle. It's held at Sandpoint, from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM

The sale is a wonderful mix of vintage treasures and crafts. I participated in the sale in December and had a very difficult time NOT spending every dime I made there on treasures from other tables and booths. It really is an awesome collection of vendors.

Crafty Gadgets

During my christmas crafting season, I treated myself to a couple of new craft gadgets - a pair of fringe scissors and a scoring board. Both are from the Martha Stewart craft line.

Now that quiet January has rolled around, I've finally had a chance to break them out of the box and do a little experimenting.

The first project I created with the gadgets was this paper flower garland. I made it for my monthly contributions to Hambly Studios, and I used their paper exclusively.

I used the scoring board to create the leaves, and the fringe scissors to create the blooms.

I'm looking forward to spending a some more time with these new tools and exploring all the possibilities!

This Makes Me Happy

I found it here in Tacoma, at an antique shop downtown. It's from the 1940's and I like trying to imagine the flower shop where it once hung, the hands that made the corsages and the occasions they were for.

This Saturday (Dec 11th) I'll be selling my wares at the Second Saturdayz Market. It's a wonderful show - a mix of crafts and vintage goods - and it's organized by my friend crafty friend Linda (of LULUZ) and her craftin/junkin' pals.

I'll be selling pins, garlands, ornaments, gift tags, and a few other treasures, too.

The show's in Hanger 30 at Magnuson Park on Sandpoint Way in Seattle WA.

Show hours are 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Come for early bird shopping (8:00 - 10:00 AM) and pay $10 to enter. Arrive after 10:00 AM and pay $4.00 general admission.

What a Day, What a Day... The Martha Stewart Holiday Craft Sale Recap

We just got home from the most amazing trip to NYC. The Martha Stewart Holiday Craft Sale was an incredible event and by far the finest craft sale I have ever participated in or attended. The caliber of craft was SO high.

It was very interesting getting a glimpse into the MS world. I also enjoyed being able to meet and mingle with so many creative and crafty folks.

The sale was held at the Martha Stewart HQ in Chelsea. "Martha" was there to meet us when we entered the sale space.

The real Martha came by and previewed the sale.

Giant wedding cake style chandeliers made of tinsel strands hung from the ceiling.

A couple of demo stations were set up and guests were able to make their own ornaments.

Before the show opened on Saturday, while everyone was still setting up, I took a moment to walk around and take a look at the other tables.

Handle and Spout had some adorable hair clips.

Vintage by Crystal had a sweet collection of spun cotton figures.

Maria Eife brought her lovely and bold felt jewelry.

Here's my table, all set up and ready to go.

The guests lined up around the block, and at noon, the doors opened and everyone flooded in. The sale was packed ALL day long.

Sales were great, and I had a chance to meet a lot of nice people who follow my craft blog, and my kitty blog too.

It was an amazing experience, and I am so grateful to have had this incredible opportunity! I'm hoping many good things will come from this day.

I am writing this post in the air, on my way to NYC for the Martha Stewart Holiday Craft Sale! My jumbo suitcases are packed to the max with hundreds of ornaments, pins, tags, flowers, and all the craft sale necessities like bags, sales book, calculator, business cards, etc.

I have to say, it feels pretty good to be on my way. I've only had two and a half weeks to prepare for the sale, and have been spending every waking moment crafting and planning. It's been fun being so focused on making things, but pretty exhausting too. I'm ready to give my hands and eyes a break.

Scrappy Cats

I've been crafting around the clock with the help of my two little studio mates, Nigel and Mimsey Frost.

They LOVE wresting in my paper scraps, so instead of throwing thing right into the recycling, I've been making a little paper nest for them.

It's fun for the kittens and it keeps them distracted, off my desk, and away from my finished work.

Well, I just got the word this morning that I'm one of the lucky five who have won a space at the Holiday Craft Sale at the Martha Stewart Creative HQ! I can't even begin to tell you what a thrill and an honor this is. I am completely over the moon about it.

As the results rolled in, and things started looking promising, I went ahead and ordered a few more supplies so I could jump right into production mode. I plan to spend the next two and half weeks glued to the chair in my craft room. I can hardly wait to begin!!

So how much should I bring? I've done plenty of craft sales, but not one with this volume of traffic. I guess I'll just keep on making and bring as much as I can complete in the time I have, and hope that's plenty.

My Crafty Companion

I wanted to introduce you to Charlene Butterbean. If you follow my other blog, The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, you've already met her.

When you work from home, you can get a little starved for interaction. Having a little studio mate like Charlene, really does help.

Most of the time she's good. She loves to sit in the window, survey the yard, and chirp at the squirrels as they run along the top of the fence. She also likes to watch me work, especially if there are birds and ribbon involved.

She has been known to get into trouble, though. Sometimes she'll sneak into the room and steal my supplies (like ribbon and birds). Many craft supplies do resemble cat toys, so that's no surprise.

One day she jumped on my desk once and swiped her floofy tail in the glue. Then she swished it again, and knocked over the glitter. The noise startled her and she ran off leaving a sparkly trail behind her, and a big mess to clean up.

Now, there are rules. She's not allowed in the craft room alone, and she can't come in when certain things are in use. Like glitter and glue.

A Few Blues

I'm trying to expand my holiday color palette and make pins that are a little less "Christmas" and a little more "festive".

I just some pretty aqua blue mushrooms this week, and they inspired this little collection.

The fine folks at the Martha Stewart Crafts Department are hosting a little contest and are giving five lucky crafters a table at their Holiday Craft Sale at the Martha Stewart Creative HQ in NYC. Many of the vendors are the creative people working at Martha Stewart, so I'm sure it will be an incredible show.

I entered the contest, the Crafts Department reviewed everyone's work, and I just found out that I was a finalist! My heart skipped a beat (or two, at least) when I read the news.

Now, they've set up a poll, and the public will decide the winners. That's where you come in.

A Holiday Sampling

Here are a few samples of the holiday pins I've been making for the upcoming sales. I've been incorporating lots of little birds, tiny pinecones, spun cotton mushrooms and miniature bottlebrush trees. They are festive and fun, and perfect for your winter coat lapel. A Paper Flowers Class!! Join Us This Saturday!

Hi Friends,, This Saturday (July 10th) from 2:00 PM to 4:30, I'm hosting a crepe paper flowers class in my home/studio in Tacoma, WA. We still have a few spaces left, and we would love to have you join us!

We'll be working with several styles of crepe paper, and will learn to make as many flowers as we possibly can during this time period. The fee is $25 and includes all materials. You just need to bring along a nice, sharp pair of scissors.

The Birds

I'm still working hard to build up lots of new inventory for the sale this weekend. Yesterday, I cranked out a dozen or so of this paper bird cage lanterns.

I used nearly all screen-printed papers by Hambly on these pieces If you're not familiar with Hambly, you should check out their website. They create the most amazing papers. The patterns and colors are incredible.

New Blooms

One of my favorite resources for paper just brought in some amazing new colors of crepe. I ordered a few rolls, and I've been having a blast playing with this new palette. There are lots of shades of pink, ranging from pale cotton candies to watermelon. Also, there's butter yellow, icy green, cream, ivory and white tones. There's even an amazing rusty brown.

The new colors have inspired me to try some new flower shapes and styles of blooms. Here's a little peek...

The Tacoma Is For Lovers craft sale is just around the corner and I've been super busy cranking out the crafts. For a VERY long time, I've been a fan of the beautiful papers made at Hambly Studios. You'll find them in lots of the DIY projects I've created. Their colors and patterns are amazing and the quality is superior.

Recently, I was invited to be a guest member of their design team, and had the opportunity to play with all their lovely papers and come up with some new projects. It was a thrill, to say the least.

Buckets of Blooms... and a Book!

I've spent the past few months tucked away in my studio working on a HUGE project - a paper flowers book/kit for Barnes and Noble. Pictured above are some of the prototype flowers.

It's been an exciting and challenging project. There were many long days and late nights, and now the manuscript is done and revised. Whew. It's such a relief to have that behind me now!

Look for it on the shelves in Feb 2011. I'll keep you posted on the exact date.

Shira, real weddings editor over at Martha Stewart Weddings , was kind enough to invite me to do a little DIY guest post on the MS Weddings blog, The Bride's Guide. It was part of their "Week of White" feature, so I created this garland with that color palette in mind.

The garland is made with layered and fused sheets of simple waxed paper. Sandwiched between the layers are punched shapes, feathers, and flowers in shades of white and off-white.

Somerset Life

One of the projects I originally designed for Once Wed, Hanging Handkerchief Vases, is featured in the current issue of Somerset Life magazine. Winter Wedding Wreath

I designed this project for a wedding, but it could easily adapted for your own home holiday decor. The base is a birch, and it's adorned with tufts of Juniper and Bay Berry Branches. The Poinsettia blooms are made of felt.

Wedding Cake Chandelier

I've started contributing DIY posts to Janie Medley's beautiful blog, The Brides Cafe. Janie is lovely gal, and I'm thrilled to be working with her.

For this project, I created a "Wedding Cake Chandelier" out of inxpensive acetate ribbon. The project isn't difficult to make, but it does require a little bit a time to construct.

My, Oh My, It's Martha !!

A few months back, I got an email from Katie, style director over at Martha Stewart Weddings. They were putting together a feature on hand made wedding elements, and she asked me if I would want to contribute to it. Of course, I jumped at the chance. I've been a fan of the magazine since day one, and I have bought literally every single issue. To be asked to be a part of it all was such a huge thrill, an honor and a complete dream come true.

After a few emails and phone calls, we figured out the color direction for the bouquet I would be making. I went shopping for ribbon, fabric and paper in whites, creams, and yellow tones, then shared my samples with Katie

Next, I did a little experimenting with some new flower ideas. I worked with linens and cottons, both patterned and plain. I also worked with crepe paper.

I made hundreds of fabric and paper leaves and petals. The flowers were constructed and arranged into a bouquet. The bouquet was carefully packed, then shipped of to New York for the photo shoot.

The issue hits the stands today. You'll find my bouquet on page 138.

A coordinating boutonniere is also featured in "A Note From Darcy" on page 20.

A huge thanks to Katie, Shira and all the fine folks at MS Weddings who made my dream a reality.

Art in the Woods

A long time ago, I can't even remember exactly what year it was, I collaborated with my friend Eileen Ward on this outdoor installation.

We both made a car-load of furry blue balls of various sizes, and with our husbands' help, decorated a cluster of trees. It was in the woods near Duvall, Washington, and part of a big outdoor art and music festival.

I have this fantasy that all of the balls have stayed perfectly in place and are now covered in inch-thick moss. Maybe a few bits of blue fur got picked off by birds, then worked into their nests in the surrounding trees.

I would love to return to this spot and see what remains.
